From coal-fired generation to cleaner alternatives

Big news for the stationary battery storage market. Last week, Australian-based Origin Energy announced its intention to close down Australia’s largest coal-fired power plant before “end of life”. Once power production will cease, the site is expected to host a 700MWh battery storage instead.

This means that we have reached a point in sun-rich areas where renewables combined with batteries outcompete existing coal-fired plants, as well summarised in the following quote: “The reality is the economics of coal-fired power stations are being put under increasing, unsustainable pressure by cleaner and lower cost generation, including solar, wind and batteries.”

Such a milestone only suggests that the battery market for stationary applications is set to grow exponentially.
