Building Europe’s battery supply chain: progress, challenges, and the road ahead
The European battery industry has come a long way since the launch of the European Battery Alliance in 2017. However, as recent developments show, the journey toward a sustainable, competitive, and resilient battery supply chain is far from straightforward.
In a recent article for FORESIGHT Climate & Energy, Bo Normark, Industrial Strategy Executive at InnoEnergy, explores the challenges and opportunities facing Europe’s battery industry. Reflecting on the progress made and hurdles like those encountered by Northvolt, he emphasizes the complexity of battery production and the critical need for stable industrial policies to ensure long-term success.
Despite these challenges, Europe has already transitioned from having almost no battery industry to making rapid advancements. With a goal to secure 20% of global battery production within reach, the continent is well-positioned to compete on the global stage—provided the right strategies and policies are in place.
