EBA250 Virtual Meetup: The role of charging infrastructure in accelerating electric heavy-vehicles
EBA250 Virtual Meetups are open to all EBA250 members of our network to get insights on latest development and important process impacting the development of the European Battery Allliance. The next online event will take palce on Tuesday 13 July, 13:00-14:30 CET and will focus on the charging infrastructure topic.
Electrification will be an important cornerstone in the sustainable, decarbonised transport system of the future. In this context it is important to highlight the increasing role that batteries play for heavy-duty- vehicles. When the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive (AFID) was adopted in 2014, the electric truck market was virtually non-existent. But with rapidly improving battery technologies combined with falling battery costs, electrification of heavy-duty vehicles is becoming a realistic and cost-efficient alternative for long-haul transport.
In fact, several major automotive players such as Volvo, Scania and Tesla are already developing battery electric vehicle (BEV) trucks for long-haul transport. More importantly, some of these are already taking sales orders.
However, a lack of charging infrastructure combined with a slow role-out of high-power charging stations could delay the adoption of electric heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs).
This EBA250 Virtual Meetup continues the discussions on the importance of accelerating the role-out of a charging infrastructure initiated during our last meetup on 08 June. During this session, we will elaborate on the lessons we can learn from the developments within the electric passenger vehicles sector. We will also address the actions that are needed to develop a robust charging infrastructure for the heavy-duty vehicles segment.
